US Capitol Insurrection: Thomas Gallagher Avoids Prison, Gets Probation After Being Arrested By Boston FBI On Charges Related To Jan. 6 Riot

Thomas Gallagher, the first person in New England to be arrested by the Boston office of the FBI as part of the nationwide search for individuals who breached the Capitol, was sentenced Wednesday to 24 months of probation.

The 61-year-old New Hampshire man was arrested in January by the Boston office of the FBI.

Gallagher is charged with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and illegally entering the Capitol building or grounds “with intent to impede government business or official functions,” according to federal court documents.

Gallagher had pleaded guilty in July to a misdemeanor of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a U.S. Capitol building.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors then dropped three other charges, including remaining in a restricted building; disorderly conduct in a restricted building; and disorderly conduct in a U.S. Capitol building, according to The Associated Press.

“In comparison to the conduct of many others that day, Mr. Gallagher’s conduct was substantially less severe,” U.S. District Judge Carl J. Nichols said, as reported by Courthouse News.

He also previously worked for Department of Defense for 32 years as a quality-control analyst and had a top-secret security clearance, the news site reported.

John Azzo, a friend of Gallagher’s, told authorities that Gallagher had traveled from New Hampshire to the Capitol to attend former President Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally after he had been “watching far too much Fox News” and “didn’t have anything else going on,” Courthouse News reported.

Others who have been charged related to actions on Jan. 6 have ranged from prison time to probation.
